  • Peacocks Shine On Diamond, Records Eclipsed

    Tying for the second-most wins in program history, the 2012 Peacocks baseball team set a multitude of records, despite falling short of a MAAC tournament berth. For the year, the squad finished with a record of 20-34 overall and 10-14 in conference action. Only twice in program history has a Saint Peter’s baseball team reached the 20-win plateau, with the last time occurring in 2008. The team’s excellence was not limited to on-field accomplishments however, as 10 players were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team, tying with Iona to lead all league schools. Also highlighting this year’s achievements was Justyn Carter and Matt Speckmann receiving All-MAAC Second Team accolades, while Carter, Chris Grimes, Mark Wilson and Matt Mancini were named to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division I All-State Second Team.

    The 2012 Baseball All-MAAC and All-Academic teams were announced yesterday evening at the annual MAAC baseball banquet. Named to the All-MAAC Second Team were senior shortstop Justyn Carter and junior utility player Matt Speckmann. Additionally, ten members of the Saint Peter’s baseball team were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. Saint Peter’s ten honorees tied with Iona College to lead all schools.

    The NJCBA announced the members of the Division I All-State Teams as well as the major award winners this afternoon. Seniors Justyn Carter and Chris Grimes, as well as junior Matt Mancini and freshman Mark Wilson were named to the Second Team.

    The Saint Peter’s College (20-34, 10-14 MAAC) baseball team concluded the 2012 season with a 4-2 loss to Iona College (21-33, 10-14 MAAC) this afternoon. The Peacocks trailed for the entirety of the contest, as the Gaels scored their first marker in the second inning.

    The Saint Peter’s College baseball team split today’s double-header against Iona College this afternoon by scores of 15-4, 5-6. The Peacocks set season highs in runs and hits in game one finishing with 15 and 17, respectively.

    A member of the Saint Peter's baseball team has received the honor of representing the student-athletes of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently announced that Peacocks' pitcher Adam Purcilly has been selected to become the MAAC's National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative for the next two years.

    The Saint Peter’s College baseball team defeated Niagara University 8-6 Sunday afternoon. After briefly trailing 5-4 for an inning, the Peacocks were able to out-score the hosts 4-1 in the last four innings to secure the victory.

    The Saint Peter’s College (18-29, 8-9 MAAC) baseball team lost both games of today’s double-header against Niagara University (19-25, 7-12 MAAC) by scores of 4-2 and 7-0. Zach Hopf (6.2 IP, 8 hits, 4 earned runs, 5 walks and 6 strike outs) picked up the loss in game one while Matt Yuhas (5 IP, 7 hits, 1 walk, 6 earned runs, 4 strike outs) was credited with the game two loss.

    The Saint Peter’s College Peacocks welcome the Rider University Broncs for their first home games in almost two weeks. The Peacocks enter this afternoon’s contest following a 7-3 non-conference loss against Monmouth last Wednesday. Saint Peter’s is led by seniors Justyn Carter (.323 batting average, .419 on base percentage, 13 stolen bases and 19 runs scored) and Chris Grimes (.280 batting average, .452 slugging percentage, 14 runs scored, 15 RBI, and 3 home runs) while the Broncs are led by Brandon Cotten (.303 batting average, 17 RBI, 28 runs scored) and Adam Wayman (.276 batting average, 24 runs scored, 22 RBI).   • Nicholas Henriquez Named New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division I Rookie of the Week

    Normal 0 Nicholas Henriquez is the NJCBA Division I Rookie of the Week honors for week eight after the 5-foot-10, 220-pounder helped Saint Peter’s do something it had never done in its history—post a three-game sweep of Siena College. In five total games he batted .400 (8-for-20) with five RBIs, two runs and a double and accumulated a .458 on-base percentage (two hit by pitch, one walk). In a 5-4 win at Siena in game one of the series on April 20, he was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a run and double. In a 4-0 win in game two of the series on April 21 he was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, helping to plate half of the Peacocks’ offense. Earlier in the week he had two hits and a run in a loss at Wagner and was 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 6-5 loss at Army.

    The Saint Peter’s College baseball team swept Siena College by scores of 4-0 and 4-3 in today’s double-header to complete the three game sweep. This marks the second time this season that the Peacocks have won a MAAC series, and the first time in program history that they have swept the Saints.

    After trailing 2-0 for four innings, the Saint Peter’s College (14-24, 5-5 MAAC) baseball team was able to score two runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh to hold on for a 5-4 victory over Siena College (13-26, 4-6 MAAC). Justyn Carter, Nick Henriquez and Brian Schroeder each recorded three hits in the triumph, while Zach Hopf pitched 6.0 innings and gave up 3 earned runs and 10 hits while striking out three to earn his third win of the season.
  • Peacocks Drop Heartbreaker To Army

    The Saint Peter’s College (13-24) baseball team dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Army (29-9) this afternoon. The Peacocks led 2-1 after five innings of play but the Black Knights came back to score four in the sixth, and added the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Ethan Jackson pitched three innings in relief and gave up two hits and the game-winning run to receive the loss.

    The Saint Peter’s College baseball team dropped a 19-2 decision to Wagner College this evening. The Peacocks scored their lone runs in the third and seventh while Wagner scored at least two runs in each inning, with the exception of the fourth when they did not score any. Eric Mozeika received the loss after giving up 6 earned runs, 6 hits and 1 walk in just 1.2 innings of work.

Brian Koster connected on a three-run home run in the third inning, while Matt Mancini pitched 6-1/3 innings and gave up 3 runs on 8 hits to record his fourth victory of the season.

Zach Hopf received the loss in game one giving up 3 earned runs, 8 hits and 4 walks in 6.1 innings. Matt Yuhas went 6 plus innings and gave up 9 hits, 5 earned runs and 2 walks for the game two loss.

    The Saint Peter’s College (12-20) baseball team rebounded from back-to-back losses last weekend with a 3-1 win over Long Island University (13-20) this afternoon. The Peacocks scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Adam Purcilly pitched a complete game, giving up 11 hits, 1 walk and striking out 4.

    Zach Hopf, Saint Peter's Baseball So., RHP - Woodbridge, NJ Sophomore right-handed pitcher Zach Hopf, is coming off one of his best starts of the season on Thursday, April 5th, when he led the Peacocks to a 5-2 win over the Marist Red Foxes. Hopf went 8 innings without allowing an earned run, and limited the Red Foxes to just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Both of Marist's runs were unearned. Hopf has struck out a MAAC leading 42 batters in 48.1 innings pitched. The Woodbridge, NJ native currently holds a GPA of 3.887.

    The Saint Peter’s College (11-20, 3-3 MAAC) baseball team lost both games of today’s double header (6-4, 4-3) against Marist College (9-16, 4-4), marking the first time since mid-March that the Peacocks have dropped consecutive contests. Matt Yuhas pitched just 2.1 innings in game one and gave up 7 hits and 4 earned runs to receive the loss, while Dom Macaluso (4.1 IP, 5 hitst, 2 earned runs) gave up the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth for the game two loss.

    The Saint Peter’s College (11-18, 4-1 MAAC) baseball team won its third consecutive game Thursday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over the Marist College Red Foxes (7-16, 2-4 MAAC). The Peacocks scored one run in the fourth and five in the following inning to establish a lead they would never surrender. Zach Hopf pitched eight innings and limited the Red Foxes to two hits without allowing an earned run. Saint Peter’s has now won seven of their last eight games, and nine of their last eleven.

    Mathew Yuhas, Saint Peter’s College Sr., RHP, 6-1, 190, Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro Yuhas pitched tremendously against Fairfield in the first game of the Peacock’s doubleheader this past Sunday. Giving up one earned run in seven innings pitched, Yuhas threw just 83 pitches and limited the Stags to five hits while striking out five to keep the Peacocks within striking distance. After being shutout for the first six innings, the Peacocks would battle back and score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to give Yuhas the complete game victory, his third win of the season.
  • Come From Behind, Walk Off Game 1 Victory Highlights Peacocks' Sweep of Double-Header Against Stags

    The Saint Peter’s College (10-18, 2-1 MAAC) baseball team swept today’s double-header against Fairfield University (10-17, 2-4 MAAC) by scores of 2-1 and 5-1 for their first MAAC series win in exactly one calendar year. The last time the Peacocks won a MAAC series was the weekend of April 2nd (2011), when they defeated Niagara Purple Eagles two games to one. Peacock starters Matt Yuhas (game one- 7 IP, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 5 strikeouts) and Matt Mancini (game two-7.0 IP, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 1 strikeout) pitched tremendously in their respective games to each earn their third win of the season. Yuhas’s complete game was capped by Matt Speckmann’s game winning pinch hit up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to give SPC the victory.

    The Saint Peter’s College (8-18, 0-1 MAAC) baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Fairfield University (10-15, 2-2 MAAC) Friday afternoon, snapping the Peacock’s three-game winning streak. The Peacocks held on to a slim one-run lead heading into the sixth, until the Stags exploded for five runs to take a 6-2 advantage. Saint Peter’s managed to score two markers in the ninth to get within one, but fell short in their comeback. Zach Hopf pitched 5 innings plus and gave up 6 earned runs on 6 hits, while striking out three to receive the loss.
