JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's University baseball team suffered a 12-10 loss in the season opener to LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon. The Peacocks were outscored 9-0 over the final five innings of an LIU rally after taking a 10-3 lead into the third inning. The Peacocks record drops to 0-1 on the season.
Leading the Peacocks on the evening was Jesse Matos with two hits, three RBI, and a run scored, while Paul Schifilliti added a two-run homerun and one run scored on the day. Five other Peacocks recorded one RBI in the game.
"I thought the guys played really well," said head coach Danny Ramirez. "The offense was superb; guys did what they needed to do to move guys over. They really played like a team during the second inning. But we have to do a better job taking care of the ball in general. Our pitchers threw well. Fastballs were a little up in the zone, but that is expected the first time out. I give lots of credit to LIU for their comeback, because they could have easily laid down after falling behind 10-3. All in all I think it was an excellent game. Offense played well, defense needs to tighten it up a little bit and take care of the ball a little better."
With the contest tied at three runs each, heading into the bottom of the second, the Peacocks put together a four hit, seven run inning to take a commanding 10-3 lead over LIU Brooklyn. Leadoff hitter, Angel Perez and James Spadaccini each reached base after being hit by pitches in consecutive at bats. A single by Nick Ciocco would load the bases before LIU pitcher Baylor LaPointe walked Mike Ionta for the first run of the rally. Then a sacrifice fly by Jose Martinez brought in Spadaccini from third base and advanced Ciocco to third. Matos cleared the bases in the next at bat driving in two more runs on a double. Hunter Mason followed with an RBI triple, sending Matos across home plate. The final two runs of the rally came by way of a two-run homerun blast over the left field fence by Schifilliti to complete the seven run second inning for the squad.
LIU would add three more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the third to cut the Peacock lead to 10-6. No runs were recorded by either team in the fourth bringing the game into the top of the fifth with the same 10-6 score.
In the top half of the fifth, LIU added four runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-run homerun, knotting the contest up at 10-10. After a scoreless bottom half of the inning by the Peacocks, the late LIU rally continued as the Blackbirds added another two-run homerun, taking over the lead for the first time since the game was 2-0 midway through the first inning.
The Peacocks comeback attempt was unsuccessful as the team recorded only one more hit over the final six outs, falling to LIU 12-10.
