Baseball Nipped by Fordham in Doubleheader on Wednesday Evening

BRONX, NY – The Saint Peter's University baseball team suffered two losses on Wednesday evening to Fordham on the road, falling 5-2 and 7-5. The Peacocks record drops to 0-11 on the season.

Game 1 

Making his first start of the season, Peacock right-handed pitcher Jake Regina (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford (Gloucester CC)) gave up just one earned run in a three-run, two hit first inning for Fordham that resulted in him receiving his first loss of the season. Over the course of the next four innings, Regina only allowed three total hits, and gave up no runs. Regina struck out two in the game and surrendered five hits in 5.0 innings of work.


After the first inning the Peacocks settled in, only allowing Fordham to get one hit over the next two innings, holding the Peacocks deficit to three runs. The Peacocks got on the board in the top of the fourth, when Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) hit a ground-rule double to left field, sending James Spadaccini (Butler, NJ/Butler) across home plate.


The Peacocks scored again in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to 3-2 behind Paul Schifilliti's (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) RBI single up the middle that scored Mike Iota (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) from second base.


Heading into the sixth inning, the Peacocks sent in right-handed reliever Matt Clementoni (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) who gave up a two-run home run to Reiss Knehr, putting Fordham up 5-2 over the Peacocks with one inning of play left. In the top of the seventh, Saint Peter's had their side retired to end the game by the same score.


Saint Peter's offense picked up five hits, while their defense recorded two costly errors in the first inning resulting in the early deficit.


Game 2


Fordham jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the Peacocks, scoring three runs in both the second and fourth innings. In the two innings, the Peacocks gave up five hits, and a two-run home run resulting in the six combined runs.


The Peacocks began a rally during the top of the fifth, beginning with Ciocco's homer to left field, for two RBI also bringing home Regina, and cutting the deficit to 6-2.


The rally continued for Saint Peter's in the sixth inning, as Ionta drove in the Peacocks third run of the game on a single through the right side with bases loaded, scoring Brian Turton (Jefferson, NJ/Jefferson Township) from third base. Ciocco then picked up his third RBI of the game off of a single to shortstop that sent Spadaccini across home plate, cutting the score to 6-4. The Peacock's scoring didn't end there as Hunter Mason (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added a RBI on a fielders choice that scored Iona from third, putting the Peacocks behind just one run with a 6-5 score.


Fordham added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead over the Peacocks to 7-5. Just like game one ended, the Peacocks went three up, three down in the final inning, dropping the second of the doubleheader.


Saint Peter's starting right-handed pitcher, Kevin Soriano (New Milford, NJ/New Milford) (0-3) pitched 3.0 innings giving up three hits, three earned runs, three walks, and earning three strikeouts.


In game two, Ciocco had the best showing as he went 2-for-3, getting three RBI and scoring one run.

Saint Peter's returns home to Jaroschak Field for a weekend series against hOURglass rival, Rider University on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon with game two following and Sunday's opening pitch is set for 1pm.
