NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Saint Peter's University baseball team gave up six runs in the first inning and could never fully come back from the deficit as they fell to Iona College 8-3 on Sunday evening in New Rochelle, New York.
The Gaels opened the game with five hits and six runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 6-0 lead over the Peacocks.
After the six-run opening stanza, the Gaels added one run in both the fourth and fifth innings, extending their lead to 8-0 over the Peacocks.
The Peacocks ended the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning when Mike Ionta (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) hit a double to left centerfield that scored Angel Perez (Jersey City, NJ/Marist HS) and Hunter Mason (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) for two runs cutting the score to 8-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Paul Schifilliti (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) hit an RBI single to centerfield that sent Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) home for the Peacocks third run of the game.
The Peacocks finished the game with nine hits but also left nine on base in the contest. Ionta led the Peacocks with two hits and two RBIs, while Schifilliti also made two hits and recorded one RBI in the game.
The baseball team will have their final series of the season against Manhattan this week on Thursday, May 18 and Saturday, May 20.
