ALBANY, NY – The Saint Peter's men's basketball team run came to an end in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament semifinal round, to the defending champion, Iona College, 73-65. The loss snapped the Peacock's seven game winning streak and dropped their overall record to 19-13.
Seniors Quadir Welton (Philadelphia, PA / Math, Civics and Science Charter) and Trevis Wyche (Neptune, NJ/Saint Peter's Prep) led the Peacocks with 18 points each. Antwon Portley (Lancaster, TX/Lancaster) was the third Peacock in double figures, adding 10 points to the scoreboard.
The Peacocks got out to an 8-5 lead by the first media break (15:27). Welton scored the first four points and six of the first eight to pace the squad. Iona went on an 11-2 behind three three-pointers, putting the Peacocks down 16-10 with just under 12 minutes on the clock. Nnamdi Enechionyia (Springfield, VA/St. James School (Samford)), answered with a three to stop the run and Griffin followed with a three of his own, cutting the score to 18-16 with 9:16 on the clock. Iona went up 24-20 after a pair of free throws, before the Peacocks outscored the Gaels 8-0 over the final 3:48 behind Welton and Wyche scoring four points each. The Peacocks took a 28-20 lead into halftime behind the final run. The Peacocks held Iona without a field goal the final 8:49 of the half, and held them to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and from long range.
The Peacocks came out of the locker room on 6-1 run that extended their lead to its largest of the night at 34-25, with 17:59 on the clock. The game changer came, when Iona scored 17 straight points to take the lead at 42-34, holding Saint Peter's scoreless for over three minutes. The Peacocks weathered the storm, on a Samuel Idowu (Brooklyn, NY/Lafayette Educational Complex) three-point play, cutting the deficit to 42-37. Wyche followed with three-point field goal to get Saint Peter's within two points at 42-40 (13:21). After cutting the deficit to a single possession, Iona went on 9-2 run, putting the Peacocks back down, 49-42. Again the Peacocks responded, getting to within four points (52-48), but Iona went on 6-0 run, making the score 58-48 with just over four minutes left. The Peacocks fell into another field goal drought that lasted for 4:36, before Portley hit a baseline runner off the bank to end drought and make the score 61-52 with 1:59 remaining. Iona responded with a basket and despite trailing by double figures, the Peacocks continued to fight as Portley hit back-to-back trifectas, and added a baseline jumper off a pump fake, getting Saint Peter's to deficit to 65-60 with 1:01 left. After Iona hit two free throws, Wyche came down and hit a quick three, to get the game to four points (67-63) with 51 seconds left. Iona added four more free throws after Peacock fouls, and a layup, while Wyche drained two free throws of his own to end the game at 73-65.
Jordan Washington who scored a game-high 22 points led Iona in the win.
