PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Saint Peter's men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to La Salle on Wednesday night in Philadelphia. The setback is the third in a row for the Peacocks after beginning the season 1-0-1.
"It was a solid performance in the first half where we edged play and had two quality moments to score, said head coach Julian Richens. "We need a better reaction if we concede than we had in the second half today."
The Peacocks and Explorers played a tight first half as neither team could find the back of the net. The Peacocks held a slim shot edge over La Salle at 7-6 but La Salle posted a 5-0 corner kick lead. The Peacock had an opportunity to score the game's first goal in the 24' when Dominic Laws got a shot on goal against La Salle goalie Mark Tobin, but Tobin made the save, keeping it knotted. The Peacocks next attempt came by way of Justin Bergman who got a shot on goal at Tobin, but Tobin again made a save to preserve the tie.
In the second half, the Explorer's Johnny Ciarlante scored his first goal of the year at the 60' mark, ending the scoreless game and giving La Salle a 1-0 lead. The Peacocks attempted to score the equalizer in back to back shot attempts by Laws and Bergman who watched on shot go high and the second get saved by Tobin respectively. La Salle snuck another tally in the goal at the 71' which was scored by Joji Olatoye for the security blanket score.
The Peacocks return home on Tuesday, September 19 at 4pm for the home-opener at Jaroschak Field against Bucknell. The contest will conclude non-conference play for the Peacocks.
