Jersey City, NJ - The Saint Peter's University men's tennis team will be opening up their fall season at the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, NY from Friday to Saturday, September 22-23. Other teams competing in the tournament include Fordham, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, Oneonta, St. Francis College, and Wagner.
Joining the Flock - The men's tennis team welcomes six new recruits. The five freshman include Sebastian Ferrer, Igor Khvorostian, John Oxner, Piotr Sowinski, and Ignacio Tintore. The additional recruit, Hector Andres Jacome, is a transfer from Mercer County Community College.
Welcome Back - The team welcomes five returners -- Ivan Knezevic, Douglas Nover, Jonathan Paredes, Gabriel Russotto, and Justin Sinprasith. Sophomore Knezevic record two singles and two doubles win in his freshman campaign. Junior Nover tallied four singles and four doubles win during his sophomore season. Senior Paredes won two singles and one doubles match during his junior year. Junior Russotto collected four singles and two doubles wins during last year. Junior Sinprasith won one doubles match in his sophomore season.
International Flavor - This year, the team has a wealth of international experience. Khvorostian, Oxner, Sowinski, and Tintore all hail from Ukraine, Canada, Poland, and Spain, respectively. Jacome is from Ecuador and Knezevic is from Croatia.
Meet the Coach - Mike Scolamieri is in his 12th season as the men's tennis head coach in 2017-18. He started out as the men's head coach and later added the women to his slate after their head coach departed. Scolamieri graduated from St. Aloysius High School where he was a basketball star on their 1959 New Jersey State Championship team. He continued his basketball career at the collegiate level playing for St. Mary's of the Plains in Kansas and later transferred to New Jersey City University. At NJCU, Scolamieri earned his Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies with a minor in English. He earned an M.A. in Curriculum and Teaching at Columbia University. Scolamieri started his coaching career as a head tennis coach at St. Mary's High School in Jersey City. He is a member of the Arlington Players' Tennis Club (APC) in Kearny, NJ and the Balboa Park Tennis Club in San Diego, CA. In 1991, he won the APC Singles "B" Championship. In 2002, he was one half of the APC Doubles Champions. Scolamieri recently resigned as captain of two adult league teams in the Arlington Player's Tennis Club. He is a 30 year member of the United States Tennis Association and is a certified Cardio Tennis Instructor. Mike and his wife Elisa, who is his assistant coach, reside in Clifton, New Jersey.
"I hope the recruits learn what level tennis they need to play to win matches on the Division I level. In addition, Saint Peter's plans on putting on a better showing than the past few years at the Hofstra Invitational."
