NEW HAVEN, CT - Three Saint Peter's University men's tennis players competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships at Yale University. Junior Hector Andres Jacome represented the Peacocks in singles and freshmen Piotr Sowinski and John Oxner represented the program in doubles. Even though the Peacocks lost in the main draw, Jacome and Oxner were able to win a consolation match before heading back to Jersey City.
About the Tournament - The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. Champions of each respective draws and the singles finalist gain a berth in the ITA Fall National Championships in November.
Up Next - The men's team will play along with the women in both of their final dual match for the fall season on October 22. Both teams will travel to Easton, PA to take on the Leopards of Lafayette College with a 12:00pm first serve.
Coach Scolamieri's words on play at the ITA Regional:
"We were competitive in every match against players from teams that are ranked much higher than us. Along with an SPU player [Oxner] defeating the No. 3 from Fairfield, it was a surprisingly successful two days that have raised our expectations for the winter season."
