JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University men's tennis team dropped a tough decision to Queens (NY), 4-3, on Sunday, February 4, in the home opener for the team. The loss drops the overall record of the team to 1-4 and 0-1 in the MAAC.
Doubles Results - The Peacocks lost the doubles tandem point, 3-0. At one point, all of the matches were close with Saint Peter's being down 3-2 on all three courts. No. 1, Hector Andres Jacome and John Oxner, and No. 2, Piotr Sowinski and Ivan Knezevic, fell by identical scores, 6-3, to Gabriel Mendez and Roman Laga and Cosme Jubera and Lucas Martinez, respectively. After being down 3-0 to begin the match at No. 3, Ignacio Tintore and Jonathan Paredes, ultimately fell 6-4, to Stan Bedrune and Hugo Evangelista.
Singles Results - The men's tennis team battled and came up one match short of the comeback. The team went 1-2 in the three setters they played from No. 1 to No. 3. No. 1, Jacome, fell 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, to Mendez. Sowinski battled to force a third but ultimately fell, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to Jubera at No. 2. Oxner was the lone three set winner at No. 3 against Martinez, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Tintore defeated Jose Zuro, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4. Douglas Nover lost at No. 5 to Richard Sec, 6-3, 6-2. Igor Khvorostian was victorious against Miguel Bendito, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6.
Birthday Success - For the second time this season when the men's tennis team played on a player's birthday, that player was victorious. On October 7, Oxner celebrated his 19th birthday with a doubles and singles win at Fordham. On Sunday, February 4, Khvorostian earned a win in singles action against Queens on his 18th birthday.
Up Next - The Saint Peter's men's and women's tennis teams stay home for a dual match with Loyola (MD). First serve is set to be hit at 12 noon in the Yanitelli Recreational Life Center Bubble on Saturday, February 10.
