The Purple Eagles Defeat Softball


NIAGARA UNIVERSITY - The Saint Peter's University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Niagara University on Monday, falling 4-2 in the first game and 6-1 in the second. The Peacock's overall record moves to 2-18 and their MAAC record is 1-6.

Game 1

Saint Peter's started Crystal Carlucci who pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two runs and recording one strikeout. Offensively, the Peacocks were able to get seven hits.

At the top of the sixth, the Peacocks scored the first two runs to lead Niagara 2-0. Samantha Storms hit a home run right after Brianna Hutchinson singled to first base. Storms recorded a 2 RBI's for the Peacocks.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Purple Eagles caught up as they scored two runs to tie with Saint Peter's 2-2.

The contest remained tied through seven innings sending the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Purple Eagles ended the game with a walk-off two-run home run, winning 4-2.

"Sam Storms provided some excitement with a big two-run homer in game one," said head coach Chris Stelma. "We had big performances by Crystal Carlucci and Alyssa Ruiz."

Game 2

The Peacocks fell behind early as Niagara recorded two runs in the bottom of the first, second and the fourth innings, taking a commanding, 6-0 lead over the Peacocks.

In the top of the sixth, the Peacocks erased the shutout by way of an RBI double to right center by Candice Koch, scoring Ramsey.

The Peacocks could not rally, as the Purple Eagles took the game 6-1.

"Candice Koch had another nice day on both sides of the ball, Harley Connors and Bree Hutchinson both had good days," said Stelma.

Next up

The Peacocks will take on Manhattan in conference action on Wednesday. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:30pm, and the second of the doubleheader is set for 2:30pm.
