Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Lafayette in Home Opener

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's softball team added a win to their overall record Thursday as they split the day's doubleheader with the Lafayette Leopards. The Peacocks dropped the first game 8-5 and won the second game 7-4.

"It was great to get a win on the board at our home opener," said head coach Chris Stelma. "We got some fire towards the end of the first game with Georgia Verrastro, Barbara Verrastro, and Alyssa Adams combining for eight hits in game one. That carried our hot hitting into game two and Sydney Ramsey took us the rest of the way with the complete game. This is a real nice building block going into conference play."

Game 1

Mary Mastriani got the start and the decision for the Peacocks. Barbara Verrastro pitched 4.1 innings to lead Saint Peter's. Nicole Feoli led the team offensively with three RBIs, one double, and a scored a run. Georgia Verrastro followed with three hits and tallied two runs for the team.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth that the Peacocks scored. With Feoli at the plate, she hit a double which advance scored Georgia Verrastro. The Leopards led the Peacocks 6-1 heading into the top of the fifth.

The Leopards continued to lead the Peacocks adding two runs in the fifth inning. In the the bottom of the sixth, the Peacocks continued to fight and scored three runs. The Peacocks started the inning off by loading the bases. Feoli hit an RBI single which allowed Georgia Verrastro and Barbara Verrastro to score a run each. With the Peacocks behind the Leopards 8-3, Shamar Sanchez singled and advanced Feoli to second base and Alyssa Adams to home plate. Theamaris Ramirez was then walked, which pushed Sanchez to second and Feoli to home plate. The Peacocks late rally ended and the team dropped the game 8-5. 

Game 2

Sydney Ramsey pitched a complete game, going all seven innings and had three strikeouts and allowed five hits and four runs. Brianna Hutchinson led the Peacocks at the plate with two runs and Shamar Sanchez led with two RBIs.

The Peacocks bounced back in the second game leading the Leopards 3-0 after two innings. In the bottom of the first Feoli scored a run on a passed ball. In the bottom of the second with the bases were loaded, Brianna Hutchinson scored following a Sanchez single. Shortly after, Feoli hit a double and advanced Sanchez to third and Adams across home plate.

In the bottom of the third, Ramirez hit a double and then stole third base with Barbara Verrastro at the plate who reached first on an error allowing Ramirez to score and extend the lead to 4-0. Hutchinson kept the energy going as she doubled and pushed Barbara Verrastro to third. Alina Guevara then hit a pop up to second base and Barbara Verrastro tagged up and crossed home for the run pushing the lead to 5-0. Sanchez kept the rally going with a double that sent Hutchinson to home plate, putting Saint Peter's ahead 6-0.

In the top of the sixth Lafayette scored their first run and trailed the Peacocks 6-1. The Peacocks added another run in the bottom of the sixth after Ramirez singled while the bases were loaded and scored Schieler Collins (7-1).

The Leopards late seventh inning comeback attempt gave them four more runs but the Peacocks ended it winning the game 7-4.

Next up

The Peacocks will start conference play on Saturday, March 31 against the Iona Gaels. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
