JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's softball team had two great performances on Thursday to close out the regular season home slate at Jaroschak Field. The play resulted in a Peacocks sweep over Coppin State, winning the first game 8-7 and dominating the second game en route to an 11-3 victory in six innings.
"We had great performances from Mary Mastriani and Sydney Ramsey on the mound, we had timely hitting and a relentless approach put us on top today," said head coach Chris Stelma. "Nicole Feoli had a great day at the plate in her final home game as a Peacock".
The Peacocks started Mary Mastriani who pitched a complete game and faced 35 batters. The top batters of the game for Saint Peter's were Barbara Verrastro with two runs and one RBI, Alyssa Adams with two runs, and Nicole Feoli with a double and two RBIs. Freshman, Natasha Solano made her debut starting as catcher for the Peacocks and led the team with three RBIs.
The Peacocks scored their first run in the bottom of the first after Alina Guevara singled to right center and Harley Connors scored a run, taking a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second Coppin St. tied the game, 1-1 with a home run from Nia Bowe. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second Feoli doubled to left field, Adams advanced to third and Barbara Verrastro reached home plate, extending the lead to 2-1.
In the top of the third, Coppin St. added another run to match the Peacocks at 2-2. In the bottom of the third the Peacocks pulled away with four runs. Sydney Ramsey hit a single, Brianna Hutchinson advanced to third and Guevara scored the third run. Shortly after, Barbara Verrastro hit a sac fly to center field and Hutchinson scored. Solano then hit a single and sent both Adams and Ramsey to home plate extending the lead to 6-2.
At the top of the fifth Coppin St. managed to catch the Peacocks and score four runs to take the lead of 7-6. The Peacocks were not rattled and came back to score two runs after Solano doubled to left field to advance Adams to third and Barbara Verrastro home followed by a sac fly from Feoli to send Adams home. The Peacocks won the game 8-7 after not allowing another run.
Sydney Ramsey started as pitcher for the Peacocks and faced 27 batters and allowed three runs in the complete game. Feoli led the Peacocks with two runs, and four RBIs. Solano followed with two runs and two RBIs.
Coppin St. led the Peacocks 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Guevara doubled down to center field and Solano scored the first run of the game for the Peacocks making it a 3-1 game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Adams and Solano were both walked and Feoli doubled to left center and Verrastro and Adams scored, tying the game at 3-3. After Feoli advanced to third Guevara hit a sac fly and Feoli advanced home for the 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth the Peacocks scored seven runs to end the game. Solano doubled to center field and Barbara Verrastro and Michelle Kugelman went on to score a run each (6-3). Feoli hit a double and advanced to third which sent Solano home for the next run (7-3). Feoli then advanced to home after an outfield error on Coppin St. With batters on second and third base, Hutchinson doubled to left center and Guevara and Connors scored a run each (10-3). The last run of the game was scored by Tiffany Lambert after Thea Ramirez hit a double to right center which ended the game in walk-off fashion for the Peacocks.
The Peacocks will close out the season at Quinnipiac on Sunday, May 6. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
