JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Peacocks dropped their final regular season game to the Siena Saints, 76-60, in the Yanitelli Center on Friday night. Sajanna Bethea led the team posting 20 points and nine rebounds while Talah Hughes added 13 points and six rebounds. Saint Peter's record drops to an overall of 3-26 and 2-18 in the MAAC.
"When you don't shoot the ball well early on you get off to a slow start," said assistant coach Phyllis Mangina.
In the first quarter the Saints took the reigns as they led 9-2 early on. Siena would outscore the Peacocks 11-8, ending the quarter up 20-10.
The Peacocks had a hard time making shots in the second quarter as they went 4-18 from the field. Siena was able to able to advance to a 15 point-lead and finished the half leading Saint Peter's 35-20.
After the break, the Peacocks pushed to get back in the game. In the third quarter Hughes posted eight points while Bethea followed with seven. The Saints kept the strong lead as they led 48-31 halfway through the quarter and finished with a 19 point lead at 60-41 at the end.
In the final stanza the Peacocks effort improved as they out-rebounded Siena 19-16, and shot 42.9 percent from beyond the three point line. Unfortunately the Peacocks were unable to catch up as they were defeated by Siena 76-60.
Jackie Benitez led the Saints with 16 points while Kollyns Scarbrough posted 14 points and five rebounds.
"Going into the tournament I think we can beat anyone we go up against. We just have to have the right mindset," said Mangina.
This concludes the women's basketball regular season play. Next up the Peacocks will head to Albany, NY to compete in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday, March 2 at 1:30p.m. against the No. 6 seed.
