WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - Saint Peter's dropped its MAAC contest to Monmouth, 51-44 on Sunday afternoon. Talah Hughes led the Peacocks with 13 points.
"We went into the game looking to attack their zone, which we did a great job with," said head coach Pat Coyle. "But in the second half we took too long getting into our offense and we ended up taking some bad shots."
The Peacocks scored the first eight points of the game as sharp shooter Velles knocked down two threes and freshman guard D'Aviyon Magazine hit a jumper to put the Peacocks on top 8-0. The Hawks immediately responded and cut the deficit to one after posting seven straight points. Pero extended the Peacocks lead as she hit back-to-back jumpers to put Saint Peter's up 12-7 before the Hawks added three points of their own. Hughes posted two jump shots followed by a jumper from Pero and Monmouth hit a 3-pointer, giving Saint Peter's an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Hawks scored the first four points of the second quarter to get within one before sending Hughes to the line, where she made one free throw to put the Peacocks up 19-15. Monmouth scored two layups on two fast breaks to tie the game at 19, forcing Saint Peter's to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Hawks got their first lead of the night, going up 21-19 with a jumper. Velles responded with a three and the Peacocks led, 22-21. A foul on Pero put the Hawks on the line as they added two points to their score before a defensive rebound from Samantha Meier propelled a fast break for the Peacocks allowing Hughes to dribble in for a jump shot. Meier followed Hughes with a corner jumper and the Peacocks led 26-23. The Hawks added two points of their own and went into halftime trailing Saint Peter's 26-25.
The Hawks claimed the lead coming out of the break, scoring the first four points of the quarter. Dalonzo added to the Peacocks score with a jumper and the Peacocks trailed, 29-28. A foul called on Hughes gave the Hawks one point to lead 30-28 but the Peacocks kept fighting and Hughes created room for a short jumper before the shot clock expired to tie things up at 30. Monmouth answered with a long two to jump back in the lead 32-30. The Hawks scored two points and led the Peacocks 34-30. Martin posted two points for the Peacocks with a finish around the rim and Saint Peter's ended the quarter trailing 34-32.
The Peacocks fell behind Monmouth as the Hawks extended their lead with with timely 3-point shots, forcing the Peacocks into a time out trailing 37-32. After the timeout, the Hawks added another three points to lead 40-32. Offensive efforts from Hughes ended the drought with a strong rebound and putback, but the Hawks shot a three and later finished a three point play to increase their lead, 46-34. The Hawks scored two more points and the Peacocks added one point before the last media timeout, with Monmouth up 48-35. The Hawks put Sammy Lochner on the charity stripe for two free throws and she sank both of them, 48-37. The Hawks then posted two points to lead the Peacocks 50-37. Hughes added one point for the Peacocks and Pero followed with a post move to count two points, 50-40 with 41.1 seconds left on the clock. The Hawks added one point and Pero posted two free throws for the Peacocks to trail the Hawks 51-42. Velles hit a floater to add the last two points of the game and the Hawks won 51-44.
Up next the Peacocks will head to Connecticut to face the Quinnipiac Bobcats on January 13. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
