NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team fell to the Iona Gaels, 52-42 on Sunday afternoon in the Hynes Center. Zoe Pero notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Leading the Gaels were Treyanna Clay and Alexis Lewis with 12 points each. Eggleston led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Peacocks got off to a good start as they led the Gaels 6-2 within the first few minutes of the first quarter. Velles was then two for two as she knocked down a three-pointer followed by a short jumper for the Peacocks to lead, 11-4. Bethea added two points for the Peacocks and the Gaels went on a nine-point run to tie the game at 13. The teams posted two points each and were tied at the end of the first quarter at 15.
The teams went shot for shot as they tied the game three times at 17, 19 and 21. Iona was able to pull away and make four straight points to lead the Peacocks 25-21. Bethea made a layup and the half ended with the Gaels in the lead, 25-23.
In the third quarter, Pero scored the first two points to make the game even at 25. Iona then had a 9-0 stretch to lead the Peacocks 34-25. Eventually the scoring drought ended for the Peacocks as Pero made a layup, 34-27. Tarabocchia counted two free throw and the Peacocks trailed the Gaels, 38-29.
The final round began and neither team scored until there was 7:11 left on the clock. Iona was bailed out and posted two free throws nudging their lead to 40-29. Bethea made a layup for the Peacocks and the Gaels posted two free throws to add the score, 42-31. The Peacocks did not back down as Pero and Haley Dalonzo combined four points followed by a big three from Tarabocchia to cut the deficit to 42-38. Iona then made a layup and D'Aviyon Magazine answered with a short jumper, 42-40. The Gaels extended their lead and Pero posted another layup before the Peacocks dropped the contest, 52-42.
The Peacocks will return to their home court and host the Siena Saints on Friday, February 2. Tip-off is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Yanitelli Center.
