LAWRENCEVILLE, NY – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) hOURglass Rival Rider University on Wednesday night. The Peacocks conference record drops to 0-2 on the young season.
"My players showed great character this evening," said head coach Melissa Sherwood. "They played with belief and determination, which was a challenge in itself after Saturday's result. They did not hide, they were courageous. We look forward to hosting Niagara on Saturday and if my players apply themselves the way we did this evening, we just might take full home advantage."
MAAC saves per game leader, Victoria Scarrat made five saves in goal for the Peacocks, making her season saves total jump up to 61, good for second best in the conference.
The Peacocks surrendered two goals in the first half, falling behind 2-0 at the break. The first goal came at the 17 and a half mark when Rider's Kourtney Cunningham received a pass that she controlled in the box, beating the Peacocks defense for the goal. In the 40' Ellie Smith headed in a cross pass that extended the Broncs lead over the Peacocks to two nil.
The third and final goal came in the 63rd minute when Smith was on the receiving end of a give and go in the box where she won the one-on-one battle to score her second goal of the night.
The Peacocks return home on Saturday afternoon at 2pm, when they host Niagara at Jaroschak Field.
