History with the Gaels
Wednesday's game will be the 26th all-time meeting between the Peacocks and Gaels. The Peacocks hold an 8-15-2 all-time mark against Iona dating back to the 1992 season. Iona holds a five-game win streak on the Peacocks, with the Peacocks last earning a win against Iona in 2011 when Saint Peter's topped Iona 2-0 in Jersey City. The Peacocks last earned a win in New Rochelle back in 1999.
Last Year's Meeting
The Peacocks fell to Iona, 2-0, last season in the MAAC home-opener.
Iona enters the contest tied with the Peacocks in the MAAC at 1-6-1. Iona's lone conference win came against Quinnipiac, winning 2-1, and the Gaels also tied with Canisius, 0-0, exactly like the Peacocks. Iona enters the game off of a 4-0 defeat at Rider on Saturday.
Last Time Out
The Saint Peter's women's soccer team ended a three-game skid on Saturday afternoon, after a 0-0 draw with Canisius College in MAAC play. With the draw the Peacocks earn one more league point giving the team four points on the season, the most points for the program since the 2011 season when that squad earned six points.
The Peacocks return home for the regular season finale against hOURglass Rival Monmouth. The game is set for a noon kick and the team will honor the senior class in the annual Senior Day celebration.
MAAC Player of the Week
Barbara Paiva earned MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week of September 11 after amassing three goals and one assist for seven total points. Paiva's three goals and seven total points were more than any other MAAC player had on the week, leading to her first career weekly award.
Looking Back at 2016
Saint Peter's ended the 2016 season with a 1-13-2 overall record and a 0-9-1 record in the MAAC. The Peacocks earned a league point for the first time in over two years last season with its draw with Fairfield and the team took playoff qualifying Canisius to overtime on senior day. Saint Peter's also gave up 34 less goals in 2016 compared to 2015, cutting its average goals allowed per game from 4.64 in 2015 to 2.81 in 2016.
Looking Forward to 2017
The Peacocks only lost three seniors from the 2016 squad and the team returns 13 players from last year's roster. Returning starters include Taylor McLean, Alyssa Conanan, Brooke Trotta, Mia Greene, Olivia Nazzaro, Alexandria Couto, Aleena Cruz, Victoria Babcock, and Kelsey Nugent.
Head coach Melissa Sherwood added six new student-athletes to the 2017 team. Nazae Craw, Isabel Fernandez, Carlee Gonzalez, Rachel Ingram, Elizabeth Pacillo, and Victoria Scarratt joined the lineup for the fall.
