Women's Soccer Upset Bid Over Monmouth Falls Short on Senior Day

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, NJ on Senior Day.

"Losing in overtime is a cruel way to be defeated and hard to take for all of us," said head coach Melissa Sherwood. "Conceding right before half time in the manner we did was also disappointing but we didn't allow that to deflate us. We are disappointed with the result but we have to put things into perspective. The performance was for the most part very good and against the conference champions. A million miles away from the 8-0 defeat last season."

In what was an absolute even battle for 100 minutes, the Peacocks and Hawks put on a great performance on Senior Day for the many parents, students, and fans that were in attendance.

In the first half, senior goalkeeper, Kelly Jamison, made 10 saves in goal. Barbara Paiva put Saint Peter's on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 22:28 mark. The Peacocks held lead until late in the half when Monmouth's Lexi Chernalis added a goal to tie the game before the half.

The scored remained knotted at 1-1 through the second half and neither team found the game-winning goal in regulation.

In overtime, Monmouth kept the Peacocks on their toes as they added one corner kick and two shots, which were saved by Jamison. The game-winning goal came from Madie Gibson at the 100th minute in overtime off of a feed from teammate Alli DeLuca, ending the game at 2-1.

"My players can be proud of their efforts today," added Sherwood. "They gave everything. Now our attention turns to the MAAC tournament."

The Peacocks will head to Lake Buena Vista, Florida to compete in the 2017 MAAC Championship tournament next Saturday on October 28.
