JERSEY CITY, NJ - Saint Peter's women's volleyball team fell to New Jersey foe, Fairleigh Dickinson in the home opener 3-0 (12-25, 10-25, 23-25,) Wednesday night in the Yanitelli Center.
"Tonight's game we just did not execute the plan and we were a bit flat as a team," said head coach Amable Martinez. "I thought we played significantly better in the 3rd set but we made a few mistakes towards the end. That's what cost us the last set."
Leaders for the Knights were Nataliya Rybakova with 11 kills, Taylor Wyckoff followed with five kills and 13 digs and Carly O'Sullivan added a team high of 21 digs.
The Peacocks got down early in the first set as they trailed the Knights 10-4. The Highlanders kept the strong lead for the next few plays, extending the lead over the Peacocks to 20-8.FDU allowed Saint Peter's four more points before winning the set 25-12.
In the beginning of the second set the Peacocks fell behind the Knights 20-4, before dropping the second set 25-10.
In the final set, the Peacocks came out with high energy as they tied FDU four times early in the game at four, six, seven, and nine. The knights were able to jump out to the lead, 11-9 as they added two points. Saint Peter's evened the score with FDU once more, at 12-12 before the FDU landed a seven-point-run to take a commanding 19-12 edge. Saint Peter's did not back down as they put together a 10-1 run, taking over the lead at 22-20 over the Knights. The Knights eventually regained the lead at 24-23 and then closed out the final set 25-23.
The Peacocks will travel to Brooklyn on Friday, September,1 to compete in the Terrier Invitational against hosts, St. Francis Brooklyn at 12:30pm. The Peacocks will wrap up the tournament on Saturday, September 2 as they face UMES at 11:30am and UMASS at 7pm.
