JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's women's volleyball team fell to Canisius, 3-0 (10-27, 14-25, 23-25) Sunday afternoon in the Yanitelli Center. Junior, Kali Viles led the Peacocks with eight kills, five digs, and three blocks.
"The first two sets we just didn't come out with much energy," said head coach Amable Martinez. "We did a better job in the third set, we played scrappy defense and pushed them to make errors, and hopefully we carry that energy into the match on Wednesday."
Leaders for the Golden Griffins were Claire Leonard with 10 kills and Cassidy Ceriani followed with 35 assists and the team high of 15 digs.
In the first set, the Peacocks trailed the Golden Griffins early at 4-12. A kill by Caitlinn Williams and a kill by Kenyale Mcginnis added to the Peacocks score of 6-12. Canisius then increased their score by nine points leading Saint Peter's, 21-6. The Peacocks continued to fight as they added four more points to the board before the Golden Griffins won the set 25-10.
The Peacocks picked up the energy as they led the Golden Griffins 3-0 in the second set. Canisius eventually caught up to the Peacocks evening the score at 4-4. Saint Peter's was unable to retrieve possession and the Golden Griffins took a four-point lead at 8-4. A few plays later the Peacocks trailed at 7-12 and gained three more points falling short one point at 11-12. Saint Peter's kept the energy trailing only by two points at 13-15. Canisius held the Peacocks to one more point as they won the set 25-14.
In the final set, the Peacocks started with intensity as they went point for point against the the Golden Griffins evening the score twice at 2-2, and 6-6. Canisius added two points to the board leading the Peacocks 8-6. The Peacocks then took the lead as they added four points including an ace from Seda, and a kill from Ruiz to lead Canisius 11-8. The Golden Griffins were able to close in on the Peacocks as evened the score 11-11. Eventually Saint Peter's came back to lead Canisius,15-13. The Golden Griffins were able to add three points to lead the Peacocks 16-15. Saint Peter's rallied back and forth with the Golden Griffins tying the game at 22-22 forcing Canisius into a timeout. A kill by Viles tied the game once more at 23, but the Golden Griffins finished the set winning 25-23.
